rooted in nature's divinity
I am Kaäla, an artist and environmental advocate. My work is rooted in ecology and shaped by nature, drawing from memory, landscape, trees, and forests.

Growing up in Uttarakhand, I was influenced by a strong lineage of environmental thinkers, activists, writers, and ecofeminists. Figures such as Gaura Devi, Mahadevi Verma, Shivani, Aditya Narayan Purohit and Kamala Pant have had a profound impact on my thinking and my art, shaping my understanding of nature as sacred, political, and deeply personal.
Alongside visual practice, my work engages with local ecologies and deeper studies of anthropology and folklore. I am particularly drawn to the preservation of indigenous food practices, ritual relationships with land, and devotional traditions - offerings to deities and goddesses that bind ecology, sustenance, and belief into everyday life. These practices, often overlooked or eroded, form an essential archive of ecological wisdom and cultural memory.

Through Studio Kaala Masala, I seek to bring these stories and visual narratives to the surface, inviting you closer to nature and, hopefully, igniting a quiet spark to protect, remember, and preserve it. If my work resonates with you, I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and explore possible collaborative opportunities.
